HOUSTON -- The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced that Nimitz High School senior Brittney Griner has been named as the 2009 State Farm/WBCA High School Player of the Year.
The 6-foot-8, 200-pound. post player averaged 27.4 points, 13.2 rebounds, 10.7 blocks, 3.0 steals, and 2.8 assists in route to a 31-1 regular season record. She also had 52 dunks through 32 games this season.
The WBCA presents this award annually to the top player in each of the five WBCA collegiate divisions (NCAA Divisions I, II, III, NAIA and JC/CC) and high school.
Griner is currently ranked No. 1 in the country by ESPN HoopGurlz and many other publications. She holds the national record for most blocks in a single game with 25, which was set on November 11, 2008 versus Alief Hastings.
"Being named the 2009 WBCA Player of the Year is very special," Brittney Griner stated. "There are a lot of great high school basketball players across the country, and to be named the best of the best is very humbling."
Griner, who has been on the cover of ESPN Rise Magazine, is often seen firing up the crowd with one of her signature dunks. She set a record for the number of dunks in a game this season with seven vs. the Aldine Mustangs on January 23.
